Dubrovnik artwork for sale — studio of Buco Pende

Buco Pende has been painting the City for more than three decades. What began as a vow — to paint a hundred scenes of Dubrovnik — turned into several thousand paintings made using a technique favoured by Renaissance masters: egg tempera. Pigment mixed with egg yolk emulsion, patiently applied layer by layer. The result is a painting of matte depth and colour that does not change for centuries.

The Dubrovnik artist Ljubomir Buco Pende has created a new cycle of paintings — small urban vedute carrying direct topographical connotations. They are always painted from memory: inward experiences of his native Dubrovnik, of the house he was born in, of the streets of his childhood and early youth. The works are devoted exclusively to views of the City, which the artist experiences as a living organism and which has become an inseparable part of his life. Pende's hyperrealist painting expresses not only his individuality but also his creative imagination, which he brings to the canvas by masterfully ‘conducting’ brush and colour with extraordinary skill, achieving an almost photorealistic effect — as though viewers were reaching out to touch the paintings.

Throughout his life Buco Pende has painted from memory: radiant, luminous, summery pictures, pleasing to the eye in their colour, of a City that has grown close to his heart — a City he loves, and with which he has never severed his spiritual umbilical cord or his inner dialogue. For however much of a realist he may be, Pende is at the same time a deeply sensitive painter, an intimist who records his own original world almost as a diary: a reality rooted deep within his singular living space.
